MERIWOOL sells 100% merino at roughly half what the marquee brands charge, and this hooded top is the clearest example: 18.5-micron wool that resists odor for days, keeps insulating when damp, and puts a hood over your head at camp without adding a separate layer. As a cold-weather baselayer or a standalone midlayer in the 30s and 40s, it earns its price. Two things to weigh. The name says lightweight, but the fabric is 250 g/m2 midweight; this is not a summer shirt, and at 340 grams it is a heavier garment than most people picture when they hear merino baselayer. And 100% merino at this micron count is fragile. Without nylon in the yarn it abrades where pack straps and hipbelt ride, so pinholes at the shoulders are the normal end of life rather than a defect. Blended merino survives a thru-hike better.
