The Flex TRK is the sensible first pair of snowshoes. The flexible composite Flex Tail deck rolls with your stride instead of slapping the snow behind you, the binding closes with gloves on, and the asking price for a 24-inch shoe with a rotating toe crampon and traction rails is fair for the category. On packed and rolling winter trail with a day pack, it does what a beginner needs. Length is the constraint. Sized for roughly 120 to 200 pounds of hiker plus gear, a 24-inch shoe is built for firm snow; take it into fresh deep powder, or load it with a multi-day pack, and you will posthole regardless. The traction is recreational as well. Rails and a toe crampon handle rolling terrain, but they do not replace crampons on steep, icy sidehill. And 1,905 grams a pair is weight on your feet, where it costs the most energy.
