Shoulder-season nights: pad and bag are one system#
On a cold November night the bag holds warm air around you and the pad keeps the ground from drawing heat out of your back. A warm bag on a thin pad still sleeps cold.
- An R-value is not a temperature rating. It measures how well a pad resists heat flowing into the ground; higher is warmer, and pads tested to ASTM F3340 compare across brands.
- R-values add when you stack pads. Closed-cell foam under an air pad gives roughly the sum of the two, and the foam still works if the air pad goes flat.
- Read the bag's comfort rating, not its limit. In the ISO and EN tests the comfort rating is for a sleeper lying relaxed; the limit is the lowest temperature at which a sleeper curled up stays warm enough, and it is not a target.
Choose the bag for the coldest night you expect, then a pad to match.

New on RidgeNote#
- Sleeping pad R-value chart — Each pad's R-value and weight now come from the maker's own page, with the weight in ounces as the maker lists it, and each row names the size and links the page.
- Backpacking checklist — Where a shelf has at least 12 products, the item shows the range most of them weigh (the middle 80 percent) instead of the lightest and heaviest on record.
- Shakedown — You can now type or paste a gear list one item per line, weights optional. A stove is only suggested in place of the same kind of stove, a pot for a pot, and a lighter option is offered only when its weight has a source.
