RidgeNote verdict

The Actik Core's argument is the hybrid battery: run the rechargeable CORE pack on weekend trips, then drop in three AAAs when you are eight days from an outlet. Six hundred lumens covers camp chores, night hiking, and picking out a trail junction across a meadow, and 88 grams sits lightly enough on your head to forget. Two things should give you pause. It is rated IPX4 - weather-resistant, not submersible - so a lamp dropped in a creek crossing is a real loss, not an inconvenience. And 600 lumens is a burst figure; run near maximum and the CORE pack is flat in a couple of hours, so the setting you actually live on is much lower. At the price listed here you are paying a large premium over the plain Actik, and the CORE pack is proprietary - when it stops holding charge in a few years, the replacement comes from Petzl at Petzl's price.
