Chlorine dioxide covers the gaps a hollow-fiber filter leaves. It handles viruses, it never clogs, silt does not destroy it, and it cannot freeze and fail silently the way a filter can. At 85 grams and a modest price the kit weighs less than most filters and treats a large volume of water, which is why it serves both as an ultralight primary treatment and as the backup people pair with a filter. The wait is the price you pay. Five minutes for the mixed drops to activate, then roughly 15 to 30 minutes in the bottle before drinking, and up to four hours where Cryptosporidium is a genuine concern. Cold water slows the kill further. The two-bottle system is fiddly with numb hands, counting drops accurately in wind is irritating, and spilling Part A wastes the kit. It also does nothing about debris or the taste of a bad source, so carry a bandana pre-filter and plan water an hour ahead.
