Squeeze Water Filtration System

The Squeeze is the default filter on long trails for reasons that hold up: 0.1-micron hollow fiber removes bacteria and protozoa, it weighs about 85 grams, and it threads directly onto standard 28 mm bottle necks, so a Smartwater bottle becomes the housing and you carry no dedicated hardware. Backflushed regularly it keeps working for years. Its failure modes deserve attention. Flow drops steadily as the fibers load, badly so in silty or tannic water, and restoring it means carrying the syringe or a backflush adapter. More seriously, if water inside the filter freezes the fibers crack and it will pass contaminated water with no visible sign anything is wrong - in freezing weather it sleeps in your bag with you, no exceptions. It does not remove viruses, which is fine across North America and not fine abroad. The included squeeze pouches are the weak link and most people replace them early.
